Job Summary

The Environmental Laboratory Technician is responsible for supporting the delivery of science and environmental education programmes through preparation, maintenance and management of the laboratory equipment, materials and facilities.

The successful candidate will ensure compliance with safety standards and assist lecturers and students in laboratory activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare laboratory materials and equipment before classes
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, chemicals and materials
  • Ensure proper storage and disposal of chemicals in accordance with safety regulations
  • Maintain accurate inventory records of laboratory supplies
  • Assist staff and students during laboratory sessions
  • Assist with the care and upkeep of lab equipment
  • Assist with record keeping and logbooks
  • Support laboratory safety and protocol adherence

Knowledge/Competencies

  • Knowledge of the dangers of hazardous materials and the appropriate action to prevent injury to self and others
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and lab techniques
  • Knowledge of good practice relating to Health and Safety regulations
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite operations.
  • Good judgement and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, methodically and adhere to schedules
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
  • Ability to be a part of a team-oriented environment
  • Time management skills

Minimum Qualification and Experience

  • Diploma or relevant qualification, e.g., Laboratory Technician Certificate
  • At least two (2) years of experience working in a lab environment
